It is commonly misspelled laundrimat or laundrymat because that seems like the more logical spelling. Where did the word even come from? Many believe it was because early eateries that had self-serve vending machines were referred to at automats. When self-serve laundries began to gain popularity the words laundry and automat merged, giving us term laundromat.
